Protect your privacy with Eraser – a free secure wipe tool – Tutorial 2 – Choosing and setting the wiping mode
In our first Eraser tutorial video, we show you how to set the security level/wiping mode in which the program operates. Setting a very high security mode will make the program operate much slower, so it is important to strike a balance between an acceptable level of security and speed. Additional Notes
Although the Gutmann method is often cited as being the most secure way to destroy data, it is almost certainly overkill for most users. Recovering data even after one pass wiping is very difficult. It can only really be done by anyone willing to spend thousands of dollars to have a hard drive forensically inspected. Furthermore, the Gutmann method was invented in 1996 and since then, even the inventor of the method has stated that it was never intended for general use.
