Tackle computer viruses with NOD32 and our easy to follow tutorials! - Tutorial 1 - Installing NOD

Getting Started:

Please note These tutorials are for the old NOD32 Version 2 only. This has been superseded by the much improved version 3. Version 3 of NOD32 is not compatible with Windows 98/ME however, so we are leaving these tutorials in-place for anyone running a legacy Windows operating system.

Ready to use NOD32 and keep computer viruses out of your PC? Great, but before installing NOD32 anti-virus, it is important to remove your old virus checking software (if you were running any). To do this, consult the documentation that came with your anti-virus software. Usually you can remove your old anti-virus software by selecting Start/control panel/add or remove programs, then selecting your old anti-virus program from the list and clicking change/remove and following all on screen instructions.

Next, click here and download the appropriate version of NOD32. ESET no longer offer a free trial of NOD32 Version 2, you should purchase a licence for NOD32 Antivirus to receive your user-name and password. A NOD32 antivirus licence can be used on either version 2 or version 3 and can be migrated from Version 2 to Version 3 should you upgrade your computer and/or operating system.

Be sure to select the correct version of NOD32 V2.7 for your operating system. If you are running Windows 95 or 98, the file that downloads should be called "nd98enst.exe"; if you are running Windows NT, XP or 2000, the file should be called "nentenst.exe", it is important to choose the right version for your computer. If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you can still download and use NOD32 V2 but we recommend you use version 3 instead, click here to go to our version 3 installation tutorial. It is easy to find which version of windows you are running simply by watching what your computer displays as it starts up.

Once you have downloaded the executable file, double click on it to start the installation process.

Installing NOD

The following box will be displayed on your screen:-

Install NOD32 step 1

Click on "Extract". This will copy files necessary for the installation to your hard drive. When this process is complete, the following window will be displayed:-

Install NOD32 step 2

Click on "Next >". The following screen will be displayed:-

Install NOD32 step 3

Make sure that there is a dot next to "Typical (Recommended for most users) and click on "Next >". The next window should look like this:-

Install NOD32 step 4

Scroll down to read all of the licence agreement then click "Next >" to proceed. The next window should look like this:-

Install NOD32 step 5

If you do not have a broadband connection to the internet, click on the box that says "I use dial-up (modem) Internet connection". Make sure there is a dot next to the option that says "I don't know whether proxy server is used. I want to use the same settings as those used by Internet Explorer." Once you have verified all of these options, click "Next >". The next window should look like this:-

Install NOD32 step 6

Here we must make a decision regarding ThreatSense. Enabling ThreatSense allows NOD32 to share data on any computer viruses you encounter with ESET (the company who produce NOD32). We recommend leaving this option turned on. If you are concerned about private data leaving your computer, click on the blue link in the window to read ESET's privacy policy before deciding whether to enable this option. Once you have made up your mind, click "Next >" to proceed to the next step.

Install NOD32 step 7

Another decision for you! Here NOD is asking you if you want to be notified of "Potentially unwanted applications". These applications are not computer viruses but they could slow your system down, however, one persons unwanted application is another person's favourite desktop widget. Again you can review the information about this component by clicking the link. If you are still in doubt, choose "Disable detection of potentially unwanted applications". When you have made up your mind, press "Next >"

Install NOD32 step 8

Nearly there now, we promise. All there is to do on this screen is make sure the box labelled "I want to start the file system monitor automatically" is checked. When this option is enabled, NOD will check for computer viruses silently and efficiently in the background, while you work, surf and play. Every user should make sure this option is on for full protection against computer viruses! It should be checked by default but make sure that it is before pressing "Next >".

Install NOD32 step 9

There is nothing to do on this window other than press "Next >".

Install NOD32 step 10

You will probably now see this window appear, asking you to restart your computer. Restart now to complete the installation. Make sure there is a dot next to "Restart now" and click finish. Your computer will now restart and NOD32 will load at start up, protecting you from computer viruses, trojans and spyware.
