Secure your PC and internet connection from hackers and malware with the Outpost firewall – Tutorial 1 - Installing Outpost
Outpost firewall is a more advanced firewall product for users looking for the greatest level of protection for their Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems. Outpost has been designed to offer the best balance between aggressive security and convenience and ease of use. Installing the product is really easy and Agnitum offer a 30 day trial to see if it meets your needs. To get started, download the latest version of Outpost firewall
here.
Once the file has loaded, double click to open it, you should then see a window like the one below:-
Select your preferred language and press OK, English should be set by default, you should then see the window below:-
Click on “Next >” to move on to the window shown below:-
Scroll down to read the licence agreement and if you agree, make sure to select “I accept the agreement” and then click “Next >” to move on to the window shown below:-
Choose an installation directory for Outpost. The default option is right for most users, so click on “Next >” to continue to the window shown below:-
Click on “Install” to start the installation procedure.
There will be a short delay while some files are copied, when the process is complete you should see the window below:-
Here you need to decide on a security level for your computer which gives you the best balance between security and convenience. Advanced security is really only recommended for advanced users, as it produces a lot of alerts which can be confusing for novices. Even in normal mode, Outpost firewall provides a very high level of security for your system. Custom configuration is for advanced users only and is not covered in this tutorial. We recommend you select “Normal Security (recommended in most cases)”. You can always change these options later.Once you have made your choice, click on “Next >” to move to the window shown below:-
Another two choices for you to make here. Firstly, you should decide if you want to participate in the Improve Net community program. If you participate, then certain anonymous data on the programs you are running and any spyware the program finds will automatically be sent back to Agnitum in order to make future versions of the program better. We recommend you participate in this scheme which benefits all Outpost firewall users, but the choice is yours.In the “Rules Autocreation” section, make sure “Automatically create rules on action request (recommended)" is selected, before clicking on “Next >” to move on to the window shown below:-
There will be a short pause while some settings are configured. When this process is complete, the window will look like this:-
Click on “Finish” to finish the installation process, you will then be taken to the window shown below:-
You will now be prompted to restart your computer. Once rebooting is complete, some basic configuration needs to be done, we will cover this in our next tutorial.
