Secure your PC and internet connection from hackers and malware with Outpost Firewall - Tutorial 1 - Installing Outpost (Updated for Outpost 2009)

Tutorial 2 - Understanding alerts Tutorial 3 - Advanced features Outpost homepage Outpost firewall is a more advanced firewall product for users looking for the greatest level of protection for their Windows Vista, XP and Windows 2000 systems. Outpost has been designed to offer the best balance between aggressive security and convenience and ease of use. Installing the product is really easy and Agnitum offer a 30 day trial to see if it meets your needs. To get started, download the latest version of Outpost here. Once the file has downloaded, double click to open it. If you are a Vista user and have User Account Control enabled you may be required to enter your administrator password and/or grant permission for the installer to continue. You should then see a window like the one below:-
Select your preferred language and click "OK", English should be set by default, you should then see the window below:-
You must choose "Run" in order for the installation to continue. The following window will then appear:-
Click on "Next >" to move on to the window shown below:-
Scroll down to read the licence agreement and if you agree, make sure to select "I accept the agreement" and then click "Next >" to move on to the window shown below:-
Here you can choose to install additional components along with the firewall. These components are useful so we recommend you leave them ticked/checked and then click on "Next >". The following window will then appear:-
Here you can choose where to install the software on your PC. The default location is fine for most users, so simply click on "Next >". The following window will then be displayed:-
Make sure "Download the lastest Outpost Firewall Pro updates during installation" is ticked, then click on "Install" to start the installation procedure.
There will be a short delay while some files are copied and configured. Windows Vista users only - you may see one or more prompts like the one shown below:-
Verify that each "Device Software" has a publisher of "Agnitum Ltd", then click "Install". You must choose "Install" for each of these components in order for Outpost Firewall to be installed correctly. All users - When the installation process is complete you should see the window below:-
Here you need to decide on a security level for your computer, which gives you the best balance between security and convenience. Advanced security is really only recommended for advanced users, as it produces a lot of alerts which can be confusing for novices. Even in normal mode, Outpost Firewall provides a very high level of security for your system. We recommend you select "Normal". You can always change this option later. Once you have made your choice, you will see the window shown below:-
Another three choices for you to make here. Firstly, you should decide if you want to participate in the ImproveNet community program. If you participate, then certain anonymous data on the programs you are running and any spyware the program finds will automatically be sent back to Agnitum in order to make future versions of the program better. We recommend that you participate in this scheme which benefits all Outpost Firewall users, but the choice is yours. In the middle section of this window, make sure "Auto create and update rules" is selected, this should be selected by default. You can also choose to "train" the firewall during its first week. We cover what this means in the next tutorial, for now, tick the box to turn this feature on. When you have made your decisions, click "Next >" to move on to the window shown below:-
There will be a short pause while some settings are configured and while the installer checks for any program updates. When this process is complete, the window will look like this:-
Click on "Finish" to finish the installation process, you will then be taken to the window shown below:-
You will now be prompted to restart your computer. Once rebooting is complete, you can move straight on to our next tutorial.
