Protect yourself from computer viruses with Avast Antivirus free - Tutorial 1 - Installing Avast

Avast Antivirus 5 is now available. This new version of the popular free antivirus suite has a completely redesigned user interface and is much easier to use. The level of protection the software provides is still excellent, especially for a free package.

Installation of Avast is straightforward, but just in case you need a helping hand we have prepared this tutorial. The first step is to download the software from the Avast download page. Save the file to the desktop or somewhere you can easily access it. Once the file has fully downloaded, double click on it to start the installation process.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 users may need to enter their administrator passwords and/or click on continue if prompted to do so by Windows User Account Control.

The following window will then appear:-

Choose your language for the installation (English is selected by default) and then click "Next >". The following window will then be displayed:-

Here you can decide if you want to participate in the Avast community. If you do, then Avast will send anonymous information about virus threats it detects on your machine. This information is used for statistics and for improving future versions of the software, but if you are concerned about privacy you can leave it deselected.

Expert users can also choose "Custom installation" which gives finer control over the installation process. We do not cover custom installation in this tutorial however.

When you have made your decisions, click on "Next >". The following window will then be displayed:-

You can now optionally install the Google Chrome web browser. If you want to try this popular alternative to Internet Explorer and Firefox then select the "Yes, also install the Google Chrome web browser". For this tutorial however, we will simply install Avast.

When you have made your decision, click on "Next >". The following window will then be displayed:-

Wait a moment while files are copied and configured. When the process is complete, the following window will appear:-

Click on "Finish". Avast antivirus is now installed and ready for use.
