Tackle computer viruses with NOD32 and our easy to follow tutorials! - Tutorial 2 - Virus Alert!

Let’s begin our tour of NOD’s features by taking a look at what happens when NOD32 finds computer viruses on your system. You will see a window like the one below:-

The first thing to remember when you see this window is “don’t panic!” Although it can look intimidating, the screen is designed to attract your attention quickly. If you see this screen, you do NOT have a virus infection; NOD32 has protected you against one. Let’s now have a look at this window in more detail.

The top of the window displays some information about the virus. File: tells you exactly where on your computer the virus is. Virus: tells you the name of the virus.Comment: displays additional information depending on the type of infection. You do not need to be concerned with this information unless you are an advanced user or IT professional.

Below the information box there are two tick boxes, “Quarantine” and “Display Warning window”. What does Quarantine mean? Just like a real life quarantine, NOD can put computer viruses in a safe, isolated area on your computer where you can inspect them without risking further infection to your system.

If you uncheck “Display warning window” NOD32 will no longer alert you about this type of virus. This is not recommended, usually you want to know right away about any computer viruses that might cause a problem on your system.

The best advice for these options is never change them unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing.

Below the two tick boxes are several options. These options will usually change depending on the type of virus NOD32 has caught. Typically the options available are:-

“Clean” This option is only available if a virus has attached itself to another file, for example a word document. Computer viruses often hide themselves inside other files, or attach themselves to files already on your computer. Using this option NOD will remove the virus from the file allowing you to use the file safely. Notice that in the picture the Clean option is not actually available (you can tell the option is unavailable due to the grey colour of the button). NOD32 tells us in the comment field that this is a newly created file and not a virus attaching itself to any other files on the computer.

If the clean option is available, you should use it. It may be that a virus has tried to attach itself to one of your files. Cleaning the virus off the file means that the file will still be usable and you will not lose any information.

"Delete" Does exactly what it says, removes the virus file before any harm can be done. If you cannot clean the file, delete it.

"Rename" Renames the infected file to a name of your choice. Please do NOT use this option unless you are an advanced user and know exactly what you are doing.

At the bottom of the screen are three more buttons, these are less important than the buttons just discussed and usually you will not need to use them. The “Help” button will open NOD32’s inbuilt help file. “Close” will dismiss the window without taking action (Please do NOT use this option unless you are an advanced user and know exactly what you are doing).

“Info” (when available) will attempt to find more information on the virus from the internet. This is only really useful to advanced users and IT professionals.

If you make, or think you have made, the wrong selection:- If you think you might have made a mistake when dealing with the alert window above, please use the on-demand scanner to check your computer for computer viruses. The on-demand scanner is covered in the next tutorial.
