Protect your privacy with Eraser – A free secure wipe tool – Tutorial 4 – The scheduler and securing free space

In our final Eraser tutorial video, we take a look at the scheduler function in the program and demonstrate how you can schedule a clean of the free space on your hard drive. Cleaning free space on your hard drive is a good way to get rid of any private data that may be left in there, but it can take a long time to complete especially on larger hard disks.

Additional Notes

If you have a lot of free hard disk space and you want to periodically wipe that space for security reasons, consider creating ballast files. A ballast file is simply any data that takes up a large amount of space, preventing Windows from writing any other data there. An easy way to create large ballast files is to use Truecrypt to create large containers on your disk. You do not need to use these containers for anything, they will just use up the excess space on your disks meaning there is less free space for eraser to have to clean. When you need that extra space, simply delete the ballast file and make a smaller one, if necessary.
