Protect yourself from computer viruses by using the free AVG antivirus from AVG Technologies - Tutorial 1 - Installing AVG

If you are looking for good protection from computer viruses, the free AVG antivirus package is a great solution for anyone on a tight budget. Even though AVG is completely free, it frequently out-ranks many of the markets leading paid-for Windows antivirus solutions, both in detecting and removing viruses and in scanning speed! In this tutorial, we will show you how to install AVG on your computer. Before you get started, you may wish to check the frequently asked questions on computer viruses and AVG.

OK, let's get started. Download the latest version of free AVG antivirus from AVG Technologies here. Save the file to your desktop, or somewhere where you can access it easily, then double click it to start the installation process. The first window should appear as shown below (Note that you will require an internet connection during the installation):-

Choose your preferred language (English should be selected by default) and click "Next >" to proceed to the next window as shown below:-

You can choose to install free AVG here, or take a trial of AVG Internet Security. AVG Internet Security offers more comprehensive protection than AVG free, but requires a yearly subscription fee. In this tutorial we'll just be installing the free AVG. Click "Next >" when you have made your decision.

The installer will now connect to the internet and download the relevant components. You'll need to wait while the files are downloaded. When the download is complete, the following window will appear:-

Scroll down to read the licence agreement and if you agree with it, select the box labelled "I have read the licence agreement" and click on "Accept" to proceed to the next window shown below:-

Make sure that "Standard Installation" is selected, then click on "Next >" to move to the next window as shown below:-

In this window, enter your name. The License number box should be filled out for you automatically, do not change what is in this box. When you are done, click on "Next >" to move to the next window as shown below:-

Here you can optionally install the AVG Security Toolbar. Web toolbars seem to be all the rage at the moment, we recommend against installing too many toolbars, but the choice is yours. When you have decided, click on "Next >" to move to the window shown below:-

Wait a moment while files are copied and configured. When this process is complete, the following window will appear:-

The installation process is almost complete. On this window there are two choices to make. Firstly, you can decide if you want to send anonymous information about virus threats AVG detects on your machine. This information is used for statistics and for improving future versions of the software, but if you are concerned about privacy you can leave it deselected.

Secondly, you can enter your e-mail address to receive news updates about AVG and information on the AVG forum. The forum is the only place to go for support for the free version of AVG, so we recommend entering your e-mail address now.

When you have made your decisions, click on "Finish". The following window will now appear:-

AVG now offers to optimize antivirus scanning. We recommend you do this now. Wait for this process to complete before turning off or restarting your computer or proceeding on to another tutorial.
