Our second free zip tutorial focuses on unpacking or extracting files from an archive. This is how you get files out of zip, rar or 7zip compressed archives. If you are not sure what any of this means, please read our guide to working with files in Windows.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 users - Additional notes

Windows Vista users should not try to look in the "documents and settings" folder when trying to find their desktop folder. Instead, look in the "users" folder. For your reference, the correct locations are :-

Windows 2000/XP - C:/documents and settings/(your user name)/desktop

Windows Vista/Windows 7 - C:/Users(your user name)/desktop

This assumes Windows is installed on your C: drive, which is the most common drive for Windows to be installed on. Not sure what your user name is? Click on the start menu and look at the top, your username is next to your picture.
