Tutorial 2 - First Steps with Zone Alarm
before completing this tutorial. This is because you may not be able to connect to our site until installation and configuration of Zone Alarm is complete. to access it. Ready to install the free Zone Alarm firewall and protect your PC from hackers? Great, first thing you need to do is download the latest Zone Alarm from the Zone Labs homepage.

to go directly to the download page for the free Zone Alarm firewall. Once you have downloaded the latest version, double click on the executable file to start the installation. The following window will then appear:-
Choose your operating system (Windows XP) by clicking the appropriate button and then click on “Next >” to move to the Window shown below:-
Make sure “Download and install” is selected, then click on “Next” to move to the window shown below:-
There will be a delay while some more files are downloaded. When the download is complete, the program will automatically move on to the window shown below:-
Here you can change the directory which Zone Alarm is installed to. The default directory is right for most users however, so just click on “Next >” to move to the next window shown below:-
In this window you can optionally register your free Zone Alarm firewall to receive news on updates or new products. We recommend you do register the product by filling out the form in this window. However, if you do not wish to register (or you have registered before) un-tick the two tick boxes, then click “Next >” to move on to the next window as shown below:-
Scroll down to read the licence agreement in this window and if you agree, make sure to put a tick in the box labelled “I accept the terms of the preceding Licence Agreement” then click “Install” to move on to the next window:-
There will be a short pause while some files are copied. Depending on your system, the following window may appear:-
This is the Windows firewall asking if you want to give Zone Alarm permission to access your network. The Windows firewall will shortly be disabled and replaced with Zone Alarm, but for now you should click on “Unblock” to allow the installation to proceed smoothly.
You may optionally fill out the registration survey on this window. When you are done, click on “Finish” to move to the next window.
In this window, simply select “Yes” to move onto the next window shown below:-
Here you can choose to try out a trial version of the excellent Zone Alarm Security Suite. You can try this commercial application out for 15 days. Once your trial period is up, you can elect to buy Zone Alarm Security Suite or simply use the free Zone Alarm firewall. In this example, we have installed the free version, however both programs perform basic operations the same. Once you have made your choice, the installation will move onto the window below:-
Almost there now. Zone Alarm can scan the programs on your computer and configure itself to work with them. If you do this now, you will get less unnecessary alerts later, therefore it is a good idea to do so. Make sure “Scan my computer (recommended)” is selected, and click on “Next >” to move to the window below:-
You will now need to reboot your P.C, click on “Finish”
Just in case you still didn't realise, the installer tells you again that you need to reboot your PC, click on OK to do so. Once the reboot is complete, you should see the window below:-
This window gives you the option to watch a short tutorial video on the Zone Alarm homepage. It is a good idea to watch the video, but if you are using Firefox or Opera, you may find that the free Zone Alarm firewall is currently blocking your web browser.
