How to make Windows faster and improve disk performance using the Disk Defragmenter in Windows XP/2000

In this short free Windows tutorial, we demonstrate how to make Windows faster by using the Disk Defragmenter utility. This video was recorded in Windows XP but the techniques are relevant to Windows 2000 and previous versions of Windows too. If you are using Windows Vista, please use this tutorial instead. Please allow for a short delay while the video loads. Once loading is complete, press the play button on the control panel below the video to start playback.

Remember, on a standard Windows XP installation, the disk defragmenter is located here: Start->All Programs->Accessories->System tools->Disk Defragmenter.

Notes: You will need to use an administrator user account (not a limited account) in order to run the Disk Defragmenter. Most user accounts are created with these privileges by default in Windows XP. If your hard disk is heavily fragmented, de-fragmenting it could take several hours. We recommend you choose a time when you will not be using your PC to allow for de-fragmenting to complete without any problems. De-fragmenting your computers hard drive is a completely safe procedure and will not cause you to lose any programs, data or settings and we recommended you perform this procedure around once a month if it is convenient for you to do so.
