Free Download Manager tutorial 1 – Install Free Download Manager

If you’re struggling downloading larger files or you’re constantly frustrated at having to restart a partially completed download then the Free Download Manager can help. Using this handy tool, you can improve your download speeds, queue up several files to download one after the other or resume a partially downloaded file in the event of an error or disconnection.

Installing Free Download Manager is easy. Firstly, download the latest version from this page here. We recommend installing the full version rather than just the ‘lite’ version. Click on the “Download” button and save the file to your desktop or somewhere you can easily access it. When the download is complete, double click on the file or choose “Run” or “Open” from your browsers download manager. Windows Vista and Windows 7 users will need to grant permission for the installation to continue if prompted to do so by Windows User Account Control. Once the installation process has started, the following window will be displayed:-

Click “Next >”, the following window will then appear:-

Scroll down to read the license agreement and if you agree, choose “I accept the agreement” then click on “Next >”. The following window will then be displayed:-

The Free Download Manager community options lets you exchange information with other users. For example, you could report a download as being malicious (i.e infected with malware) or view other users reports. If you want to use this facility, tick/check the box on this window and then click on “Next >”. The following window will then appear:-

On this page you can enable Bittorrent support. Bittorrent is a method for distributing files between computers on the internet. If you don’t already have a Bittorrent program, we recommend you let Free Download Manager handle it. Click on “Next >” when you have decided, the following window will then be displayed:-

Choose your preferred language for the program interface. English is selected as the default option, so simply click “Next >”. The following window will then be displayed:-

The installer now gives you the option of installing Software Informer at the same time. If you are interested in Software Informer, please see our tutorials here. We won’t be installing Software Informer as part of this tutorial, so make sure the box labelled “Yes, install Software Informer”, is deselected, then click “Next >”. The following window will then appear:-

Here, you can choose where to install the program on your computer. The default location is fine for most users, so simply click “Next >”. The following window will then appear:-

Here you can choose where to place the programs shortcuts. Again, the default location is fine, so simply click on “Next >”. The following window will then be displayed:-

On this window you can optionally choose to create desktop short-cuts and also choose if you want Free Download Manager to load at startup. Set these options however you choose (or simply take the default choices) and then click on “Next >”. The following window will then be displayed:-

The installer now gives you the opportunity to review your settings. Click on “Install” to start copying and configuring the program files. After a short delay the following window will be displayed:-

Installation is now complete, click on Finish and Free Download Manager will start, you can now proceed directly to our next tutorial.
