Truecrypt encryption tutorial 3 - How to use encrypted volumes, digital safes for your Windows PC

In this Truecrypt tutorial video, we show you how to mount an encrypted volume. This process is like unlocking a digital safe on your computer. Once mounted, or unlocked, these volumes can hold any type of data.

Keep in mind that the software cannot secure any data outside of an encrypted volume. While this may sound like an obvious thing to say, it is easy to forget that Windows may make several temporary copies of data you are working on, both in memory and on your hard drive. You should also keep in mind that files deleted or moved by Windows on a normal (unencrypted) hard drive are easy to recover, with the right software. Using a file shredder can help with these problems, check out our guide to file shredders if you have not done so already.

Because these encrypted volumes act like any other disk in Windows, once they have been unlocked and mounted, you can even install programs to them. Installing software such as e-mail or instant messaging programs to an encrypted volume may give you extra security. However, just because a program is installed on a encrypted volume does not mean that all the data it produces or uses will be written to the encrypted volume.
