Want fully animated wallpaper for your Windows Vista PC? If you have Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, we'll show you how you can download Windows DreamScene for free

What is Windows DreamScene?

Imagine if instead of a static picture on your Windows desktop you could have a fully animated desktop background. Windows DreamScene is a Windows Ultimate Extra that allows you to watch animated wallpapers on your Windows Vista PC. The effect is like having a screen saver style animation, but running ON your desktop, under your windows and icons and not obscuring them. In order to do this, you'll need Windows Vista Ultimate Edition installed on a PC that's capable of running the Windows Aero desktop.

I don't know if I have Windows Vista Ultimate - If you are not sure which version of Windows Vista you have, it is easy to find out. First, open your Start menu and in the search box, enter "winver".

Searching for Winver

Click on the "winver" search result and the following window will appear:-

Showing which version of Windows is running

The version of Windows is shown at the top of the window. If your window looks like the one above, then you have Windows Vista Ultimate. If you still want animated wallpapers and you don't have Windows Vista Ultimate, then you'll need to use Stardock DeskScapes instead. DeskScapes supports all editions of Windows Vista and Windows XP, we cover its use in a separate tutorial. Click here to go back and view our DeskScapes tutorials instead. Note: Stardock DeskScapes is expected to support Windows 7 in version 3 which will be released in the near future.

If you are lucky enough to have Windows Vista Ultimate, you can go ahead and get DreamScene using Windows Update. If you are not sure how to access Windows Update on your computer, this tutorial will show you the basics.

Once in Windows Update, you should see the Windows Ultimate Extras section, click on "View Available Extras" as shown in the picture below:-

Getting Windows Ultimate Extras

Once you have clicked "View Available Extras" you should be taken directly to the list of Windows Ultimate Extras. Make sure you tick or check "Windows DreamScene" then click "Install". Enter your administrator password and/or click continue if Windows User Account Control prompts you to do so.

Getting Windows Dreamscene

Once the update has finished downloading, you may need to restart your computer. You can then access your new animated wallpapers in the same way as you do your regular wallpapers. We will show you exactly how in the next tutorial.
