Why Does Marc Recommend NOT Compressing Hard Drives? In Windows XP, the term “Compress” means to pack data more efficiently (in terms of space used) on your hard drive or removable drive. On the surface this can sound like a great idea as you are getting extra space on your computer for no extra cost. In practise however, using this option can slow your computer down and also cause compatibility problems with some software. In light of this, we would have to agree with Marc’s recommendation to leave drive compression turned off.

Are My Documents Really Private? If you store files or folders in the “My Documents” folders in Windows XP, then Windows takes some measures to hide these files from other users. However, this should be thought of as a low security feature and it can be easily circumvented by anyone with advanced knowledge of Windows XP who has physical access to your machine.
