Learn how to configure and test the Windows Vista Firewall with this easy video tutorial

The Windows Vista Firewall provides a basic level of protection against hackers on Windows Vista as soon as you start your computer up. Although the new Vista Firewall can be configured to filter both incoming and outgoing traffic, by default it only acts like the firewall in Windows XP, that is, it will only filter incoming connections. Configuring the Vista Firewall to filter outgoing traffic is unfortunately a complex process and is not covered in this tutorial.

This video tutorial demonstrates the most common configuration options for the Vista Firewall and discusses when you might need to use them. Finally, if you need to turn off the Windows Firewall for any reason, this video shows you how to do that too.

Not using Windows Vista? Tutorials for the Windows Firewall are available for Windows 7 and Windows XP users too. Click here for the Windows 7 version, or click here for the Windows XP version.

Additional notes

If you are curious about the advanced configuration options mentioned in the video, you may wish to read this Windows Vista Firewall article from Microsoft. Be warned though, it is a little technical! For more information on adding exceptions to the firewall in Vista, check out the help files in Windows Vista.
