Performing a Windows XP update manually is usually a straightforward process. Even if you have automatic updates turned on, you still might want to perform this procedure periodically, since only critical updates are installed automatically. Updating the updater?

If Windows Update itself is out of date, then it cannot continue to update your PC. If you see a message like the one shown below:-



then you will need to click “Download and Install Now” to update Windows Update! After clicking to download, follow all the on-screen prompts. The procedure should be pretty straightforward. You may also have to validate your copy of Windows, this checks your serial number against a database of known stolen serial numbers and notifies you if your copy of Windows may be a fake. If Microsoft suspect your copy of being counterfeit, don't worry, they won't be sending the police around, they will however provide you with the information necessary to help you validate your copy of Windows or obtain a genuine one.
