Secure your Windows Vista PC and internet connection from hackers and malware with Zone Alarm firewall – Tutorial 1 - Installing Zone Alarm

Windows Vista users can now benefit from the extra protection that Zone Alarm firewall offers. However, we noticed that the installation goes a little differently for Windows Vista users. Because of this, we prepared this tutorial especially for Windows Vista users.

Windows XP Users if you surfed onto this page and you are a Windows XP user, please click here.

Important! If this is your first time using the Zone Alarm firewall, we recommend you watch Tutorial 2 - First Steps with Zone Alarm before completing this tutorial. This is because you may not be able to connect to our site until installation and configuration of Zone Alarm is complete. If you have a printer you may wish to print this page just in case you have difficulty connecting to the internet while installing the firewall.

Ready to install the free Zone Alarm firewall and protect your PC from hackers? Great, first thing you need to do is download the latest Zone Alarm from the Zone Labs homepage. Click here to go directly to the download page for the free Zone Alarm firewall. Once you have downloaded the latest version, double click on the executable file to start the installation. The following window will then appear:-

Choose your operating system (Windows Vista) by clicking the appropriate button and then click on “Next >” to move to the Window shown below:-

Make sure “Download and install” is selected, then click on “Next” to move to the window shown below:-

There will be a delay while some more files are downloaded. When the download is complete, the program will automatically move on to the window shown below:-

Here you can change the directory which Zone Alarm is installed to. The default directory is right for most users however, so just click on “Next >” to move to the next window shown below:-

In this window you can optionally register your free Zone Alarm firewall to receive news on updates or new products. We recommend you do register the product by filling out the form in this window. However, if you do not wish to register (or you have registered before) un-tick the two tick boxes, then click “Next >” to move on to the next window as shown below:-

Scroll down to read the licence agreement in this window and if you agree, make sure to put a tick in the box labelled “I accept the terms of the preceding Licence Agreement” then click “Install” to move on to the next window:-

There will be a short pause while some files are copied. During the file copy process, you will see a window like this appear:-

Windows Vista is double checking with you before it installs a new piece of system software. Click on Install to proceed, since we trust Check Point software (the makers of Zone Alarm).

You may optionally fill out the registration survey on this window. When you are done, click on “Finish” to move to the next window.

In this window, simply select “Yes” to move on to the next window shown below:-

Almost there now. Zone Alarm can scan the programs on your computer and configure itself to work with them. If you do this now, you will get less unnecessary alerts later, therefore it is a good idea to do so. Make sure “Scan my computer (recommended)” is selected and click on “Next >” to move to the window below:-

You will now need to reboot your P.C, click on “Finish”

Just in case you still didn't realise, the installer tells you again that you need to reboot your PC, click on OK to do so. Once the reboot is complete, you should see the window below:-

This window gives you the option to go to the ZoneAlarm Security Services website. Here you can register an account with Check Point or watch a short tutorial video. It is a good idea to watch the video, so click on “Launch ZoneAlarm Security Services”. The following window will now appear:-

Click on “Yes” so that Zone Alarm can connect you to the website. Internet Explorer will now open (even if you usually use Firefox or Opera) and display the Security Services website where you can watch the tutorial video.

Our next tutorial will show you how to start using and configuring Zone Alarm for your PC and home network.
