Configuring Gmail accounts for IMAP/Thunderbird access

If you want to use Thunderbird (or any other IMAP software, for example the e-mail software on your smartphone) with your Gmail account then you will need to follow this quick tutorial to enable it. To get started, log into your Gmail account on the web as per normal. Once you have logged in, look for the cog or gear shaped icon in the top right of the screen and click on it. The picture below shows the menu that will appear.

Choose “Settings” from the menu. A settings screen will then appear. Choose “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” as shown in the picture below (click on the picture to enlarge it).

On the options that are now displayed, choose “Enable IMAP”. Now, click “Save Changes”.

That’s it, you can now use Thunderbird with your Gmail account.
