Microsoft Security Essentials tutorial 1 – Installation
Protect your system for free using Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Security Essentials is a great free antivirus product from non other than Microsoft themselves. Unlike many of the alternative free antivirus packages on the market, Security Essentials comes without any of the unnecessary components such as registry cleaners or so-called system health checkers.
Installing the program is really easy. Just in case anyone needs a helping hand, we prepared this short tutorial. The first thing to do is download the latest version of the software from Microsoft. Visit this link to obtain the latest version of the program. Choose either the 32 (x86) or 64 bit (amd64) version depending on your operating system. If you’re not sure how to tell which version you need, see our tip of the month in the 50th issue of our newsletter.
Save the downloaded file somewhere you can easily access it. When the download is complete, double click on the file or choose “Run” or “Open” in your browsers download manager. Enter your password and/or click on “Yes” if prompted to do so by Windows User Account Control. The following window will then appear:-
Click “Next >” to begin the installation process. The following window will then be displayed:-
Scroll down to read the license agreement and if you agree, click on “I accept”. The following window will then appear:-
You are now given the option of joining the “Customer Experience Improvement Program”. If you agree to participate in this program, Microsoft will collect anonymous usage statistics from your copy of Security Essentials. This does not affect how the software functions, so choose whichever option you are comfortable with, then click on “Next >”. The following window will then be displayed:-
Running a software firewall is always a good idea, even if you have a router. If you don’t have a third party firewall product installed, make sure the option on this window is selected, then click on “Next >”. The window shown below will then appear:-
It might seem tempting to run more than one antivirus product to increase the protection level on your PC. In practise however, this is rarely a good idea since the two products can conflict with each other. Uninstall any other antivirus software according to the documentation/help files that came with the product. Note if you have an anti-spyware package that does not include real-time protection you can safely use that along with Security Essentials.
When you are sure that you have uninstalled all other antivirus software, click on “Install >”. There will be a short pause while files are copied and configured. When the process is complete, the following window will appear:-
Installation is now complete. Click on “Finish” and Security Essentials will launch and download the latest updates. You can now proceed directly to the next tutorial.
