Installing the Windows 8.1 upgrade

Windows 8.1 is here and it’s a free upgrade for anyone running Windows 8. Installing the upgrade is really easy, all you need to do is visit the store and follow some simple steps. In this video, we take you through installing the update. Before installing the update, you should take a backup of all your important files, just in case. If you have been using Truecrypt or Bitlocker on your PC, you will need to temporarily decrypt your hard drive before performing the upgrade.

Additional notes

Unfortunately, downloading the Windows 8.1 upgrade through the Windows store is the only way to obtain it. You cannot download the update onto a USB drive, for instance. Since the update is 3.5 gigabytes, be careful if you have several PC’s in your home to update and you are on an internet connection that has download limits.
